Title: The Beagle Conflict Vol.1
Author: Antonio Luis Sapienza
Publisher: Helion & Co
ISBN: 978-1-804513-73-6

Argentina and Chile on the Brink of War, 1904-1978, number 36 in the Latin America @ War series from Helion & Co. A 100-page soft-cover book in the usual style for this series.
Border clashes between neighbours can often lead to military clashes. In this case a dispute between Chile and Argentina. The history goes back for many years, and that part of the story is explained in the opening sections, at one point even involving Bolivia. The more recent part of the story relates to the southern most parts of both countries and control over the islands at the southern tip of South America and the Beagle Channel. What we have is a disagreement between 2 military dictatorships and their failure to come up with a mutually acceptable solution. Even seeking independent mediation was not successful, so we are presented with a detail look at the military organisations of both countries, their equipment and their various strengths. As usual with this series, there are plenty of archive images throughout, and a section of 6 pages of colour artwork with military vehicle, aircraft and naval ships, as well as relevant maps, which all help illustrate the story.
This is just the first part of this story, so we expect the remainder to be presented in volume 2. I found it an interesting story, and one I really knew nothing about beforehand. There is a well detailed survey of the military capabilities of both sides, with tables setting out the different and varied resources available to them. I found it interesting to see the mix of equipment, including some things left over from the WW2 period, and other more recent bits and pieces. For the modeller, AFV and aircraft enthusiasts, there is plenty in here to grab your attention I think.
Thanks to the publishers, Helion & Co for the review copy.
