MiG-15 versus B-29 in the Korean War 1950-53, number 52 in the Asia @ War series from Helion & Co. A 92-page soft-cover book in the now usual style for this series.
A veteran of WW2 the Boeing B29 Superfortress went into action once again in the Korean War, carrying out both strategic and tactical bombing missions. A key feature of this one is that it is all based around the archive records and recollections of the many of the pilots of the Russian 64th Fighter Air Corps, held in the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. Flying from airfields inside Russia most of the time, these pilots are those which gave the name to the famous 'MiG Alley' over North Korea during the war. The book is then split into two main parts, the first covering the period when the B-29s repeated their role of daylight bombing formations of WW2, with War from Dawn to Dusk. Despite large numbers of escorting fighters, the MiGs were still able to inflict losses and damage that led to a change of US tactics, as they moved to night operations, using more radar guidance for their missions, and even started painting the undersides of the aircraft in Black. Even more detail is provided in the 4 Appendices at the end.
The Korean War remains something of a forgotten conflict to many of us I think, so this one is thoroughly interesting in my view. Especially so as it is written from the point of view of the Russian MiG pilots who were engaged in the war. There are 14-pages of fine colour profiles, featuring both MiG 15s and B-29s, plus a couple of full colour maps. Plenty of archive photos are used to illustrate the stories throughout the book. Ultimately, the speeds of the modern jets meant the end of the large piston engined bomber that had first made its name in WW2.
Thanks to Helion & Co for the review copy.
