FlightCraft Special 2 covers the detail of the Fw 190 A-G series, a recent release from Pen & Sword. A 96-page soft-cover book.
As a Special, this one is a bit different to the usual books in this series, as it doesn't have any model showcase or products listing. This is all about airframe detail for the many radial engine variants of the 190, along with the colours and markings they wore over the course of WW2. Divided into 11 sections, following the brief introduction it explores the design & development story, leading into the 190s entry into service, in March 1941. That is followed by the first of two sections of colour profiles, with 8 pages of neat artwork. This leads neatly into a chapter on camouflage & markings Then it expands into the gradual development of the type, as they were used on all fronts, which leads to the second group of 8 pages of more colour profiles which should give some inspiration to the modellers among us. The different uses that the aircraft was used for are well covered with fighters and ground attack, dedicated ground attack (Schlachtflieger), the Mistel combinations as well as a number of examples of captured aircraft tested and used by the Allies. Only a brief mention is made of the later long nose versions, as these are outside the scope of this one. There are a couple of Appendices to round the book off, and I think many will be surprised by the large number of armament combinations to be found across the Fw 190 family.
Lots of interesting material throughout the book, while as well as the 2 sets of colour profiles there are a lot of archive photos included throughout the book, and with their captions give us a lot more detail which modellers will love I think. The quality and size of the pictures are a good size and very clear. Again, for the modeller, there are plenty of ideas in here for diorama scenes as well as airframe detail. One I would recommend as good value for money for the aircraft modeller.
Thanks to Pen & Sword for the review copy.
